Can tourists rent a car in Slovenia?
Yes — and with fewer obstacles than most people expect. Here is exactly what you need to bring, what it costs to secure, and where you are allowed to drive it.
The short answer
A standard licence, a passport and a card for the deposit.
Slovenia places no special restriction on visitors renting cars. If you hold a valid category B driving licence and can cover the security deposit, you can rent here whether you live in Ljubljana or arrived this morning from Manchester.
The paperwork is deliberately short. We need your driving licence and an identity document — a passport for visitors from outside the EU, a national ID card for those inside it. The rental agreement is signed at handover and takes a few minutes to read and complete.
The one thing worth checking before you fly is the alphabet your licence is printed in. Licences issued in the Latin alphabet are read directly. If yours uses another script, bring an international driving permit alongside it — the permit is a translation, so it never replaces the original licence, it accompanies it.
Everything else that trips people up elsewhere — young driver surcharges, second driver fees, mileage caps, insurance sold at the desk — does not apply here. Comprehensive cover and unlimited mileage are already in the rate.

Beyond the border

Croatia
Ljubljana to Zagreb is under two hours, and the Istrian coast is closer still. Tell us when you book so we can prepare the paperwork.
Austria
Klagenfurt is about an hour and a half through the Karawanks tunnel, Vienna roughly four. Both are within comfortable range.
Italy
Trieste sits an hour and a half from Ljubljana, Venice around three. The border crossing is unmanned in practice.
Tell us in advance
Cross-border travel needs to be noted on the rental agreement and the insurance. It is straightforward, but it has to be arranged before you leave, not afterwards.
Vignettes abroad
Austria and Slovenia both require motorway vignettes. Ours comes with the car; for other countries we will tell you what to buy.
Charging abroad
The Tesla Supercharger network covers Croatia, Austria and Italy densely, and the car navigates to chargers automatically.
Slovenia is small. Its neighbours are close.
Zagreb, Trieste and Klagenfurt are all within two hours of Ljubljana.

Can tourists rent a car in Slovenia?
Yes. There is no restriction on visitors renting cars in Slovenia. A valid category B licence, an identity document and the security deposit are all that is required.
Do I need an international driving permit?
Only if your licence is printed in a non-Latin alphabet. EU, UK, US, Australian and similar licences are accepted on their own. If in doubt, message us before you travel and we will confirm.
What is the minimum age?
25 years. There is no upper age limit and no additional surcharge for younger or older drivers within that range.
How much is the deposit and when do I get it back?
500€, held as a refundable security and released once the car has been checked back in. It is kept separate from the rental cost.
Can I drive the car to Croatia, Austria or Italy?
Yes, but it must be noted on the rental agreement and the insurance beforehand. Tell us your plans when booking — it is a formality, but it cannot be arranged retroactively.
Is insurance included or do I buy it separately?
Full comprehensive insurance is included in the daily rate. There is nothing to add at handover and no reduced tier.
Do I need to buy a motorway vignette?
No. Slovenian motorways require an electronic vignette and our cars are supplied with a valid one. For other countries we will tell you what applies to your route.
